St. Cuthbert's House

northumbrian bed and breakfast

Want to stay local today? Things to do on our doorstep.

Here's some inspiration for things to see and do within a short distance of St Cuthbert's House. We've applied a nominal range of about three miles, since this is about as far as we'd want to walk home if we'd been for a leisurely beer... We also have another page with ideas for things to do without the car, you might want to check out. And if you're going further afield to expore, then you want this page. A trip to The Farne Islands or Holy Island has its own page!

First - a map: you can click-and-drag the map around to see different parts of it, and you can use the + and - icons to zoom in and out. You can also view the map in its own web page if you click here.
Lilac pins = Castles, Houses etc Blue = Pubs, Shops etc, Sand = Towns, Places, Beaches etc

Secondly - there's a lot of information further down the page below the map!

Explore Seahouses harbour

The harbour is a fascinating and interesting place to while away some time - with or without a pint. Beyond the harbour are the original fishermen’s cottages. The roads are broken and unpaved because the Council hasn’t adopted them, but it augments the ‘quaint’ feel. The old smokehouse is down there, and is a place you should definitely visit. You also get the best view of the harbour from around here, and most people miss it.

Bamburgh Castle (01668 214515)
Perhaps the most iconic photo you'll take, or see - but be sure to get into the right place to take it. We have vouchers which will give you a discount on the admission ticket.

There's a tiny patch of water tucked away off the road in West Fleetham, and a bird hide where you can lose yourself. There's a large pool at Monks House with some interesting bird life too.

Go for a walk - Bamburgh, Beadnell, along the beach, across the fields, on the quiet lane - so many choices.

The Crazy Golf Course! How long is it since you played?

The tidal mudflats at Budle Bay is a great place for birdwatching - or just whiling away some time. If you walk there, you go by Budle Point, which is perhaps the finest viewpoint on the coast path - Holy Island and Berwick to the north, Farne Islands to the east, Bamburgh Castle and beach to th south. You won't want to go home.

Beadnell Harbour is an interesting small harbour, because it's the only one on the east coast of England which faces west! The beach there is just stunning too, with views south to our favourite castle, Dunstanburgh.

Seahouses has s a popular and interesting golf course to play. It also has the Northumberland Coast Path running across it, and gives a lovely entrance to the village, via the harbour.

Saturday March 18 - Krista Detor and band

We're absolutely delighted to welcome Krista back to SCH, having heard her here in  2013 and 2015.  She brings intelligent and always-beautiful music, and a performance which is mature and measured. An evening with Krista is so much more than simply listening to music...

Her solo albums have reached national and international prominence, including number one on the Euro AmericanaChart and placement within the top 10 of the US Folk and Independent Music charts. She has performed with such notable artists as Suzanne Vega, Joan Armatrading and Louden Wainwright, among others. Her choral works have been commissioned by several choirs.

A returning guest lecturer at Stanford University, Detor works with students in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric. Her album, 'Chocolate Paper Suties' is now ‘required reading for the literature course.

Clare votes us her No 1!

We've been enjoying reading Clare Balding's new book recently. She stayed with us here at St Cuthbert's House a while ago, but we were really taken aback when folks began to call to tell us that she mentions her stay at St Cuthbert's House in the book! Here's what she says, on page 201:
'St Cuthbert's House went instantly to the top of my 'best ever B&Bs' list. I would describe it as a luxury small hotel with a family feel, but that might not fit on the signs.' Aw, thanks Clare!

Want to see what's so special about Northumberland?

Some time ago, we began work with our local Tourism Association to produce a video showing some of the things which make this area so very special.  Now the video is complete, and we are deeply grateful to the remarkable young film-maker Cain Scrimgeour for working patiently with us across the seasons, to create something very, very beautiful. This is 7 minutes long, and we urge you to settle back and watch...
