Something for tea-break...

A recent episode of Michael Portillo's series Great Railway Journeys saw him travelling the stretch of line from Berwick upon Tweed, south through Northumberland to Newcastle. It's a thing of beauty - a lovely snapshot of this gorgeous area. And how we whooped as we enjoyed a typically assured contribution from our good friend (fanfare please) Derek Sharman. Whether railways are your thing or not, do yourself a favour; make a brew and give yourself half an hour with this.

Happy New Year!

We hope that 2012 will be a year filled with hope and peace for you. We're well aware of the very real economic squeeze we're living through, and that your time away will be even more precious and carefully-considered this year. You can be sure your leisure investment is a sound one at St Cuthbert's House - especially since we've held our prices for the third consecutive year, despite implementing many improvements. A very special guest returns...

Michael Gainsborough, who was born here at St Cuthbert's House, pictured with his wife Sally
We were stopped in our tracks when Michael Gainsborough called to make a reservation recently. Having completed the transaction, he revealed that he had been born (many years ago!) in our home, the Manse attached to the former church which is now St Cuthbert's House.

His grandfather was the Minister of the church early in the 20th Century, and his mother was brought here so as to have a 'proper midwife' attend to her - a privilege not afforded to many women in those days. Michael was subsequently christened in the church.

It was delightful to share stories with Michael and his wife Sally, and especially lovely to see him tracing his roots - he had not been back to Northumberland in very many years. A lovely encounter!

Our Green Gold Award
Green is our new Gold at the NE Tourism Awards 2011

Woohoo! We just won GOLD at the NE Tourism Awards 2011, in the Sustainable Tourism category. Fantastic!

We were up against some very strong competetion in this category (I'm talking about the 'compost toilets' kind of strong) and so we were absolutely delighted to win the top prize. We are passionate about local food (and beers) and conducting our business in a way which doesn't cost the earth, so this is a prize we'll treasure. But you don't need to wear a 'hair shirt' in order to make your stay a responsible one.

St Cuthbert's House bees make honey!

Our bees have done really well this year, despite it being a difficult summer for many beekeepers - and we are serving their excellent honey on the breakfast table now!
