We've been awarded many accolades, and have won several prestigious awards over the years. The reason we put St Cuthbert's House forward for these various Awards is mainly to assure you, our guest, that you are not 'taking a chance' by coming to stay at St Cuthbert's House; we have been repeatedly and objectively measured and assessed by experienced judges, who continue to place us at the very top of the tree, both regionally and nationally. So you don't need to worry about whether a stay at St Cuthbert's House really is as good as we promise - because there's plenty of evidence to assure you! Time away is precious, for each of us, and no-one wants to 'take a chance' in the hope that we're choosing wisely... Here are some of our Awards, and what they mean for you.
At the 2016 Visit England Awards - the 'Tourism Oscars' - we were honoured to be amongst the medals in TWO categories - both Guest Accommodation of the Year and also Sustainable Tourism Business of the Year.
We want you to have a wonderful experience of this amazing area, but we also passionately believe that your visit should make our rural community a better place to live and work for local people, too. We’re delighted that our determination to provide an unforgettable guest experience which also builds our local economy, has brought us these national Awards in two categories, and to be considered amongst the best in the whole country!
Here's Jeff & Jill, together with daughters Hannah & Abi, pictured receiving their Awards at the glittering ceremony at the Winter gardens in Blackpool in March 2016.
This year, we entered the national VisitEngland Awards in the Sustainable Tourism category - in fear and trembling! This category attracts the very best and most environmentally-aware businesses from across the whole country, and so we knew we were mixing it with the big boys. To be shortlisted nationally was wonderful, but to win the SILVER award was beyond our wildest dreams! We're thrilled.
The judges wrote afterwards, and said: "You were up against some really stiff opposition, so you should be very proud of what you have achieved. It's fully deserved... so impressed by the way the business (and the building) has integrated itself within the community, has become such an asset to it, and provides guests with such a positive experience of it. Well done!"
So that is indeed a wonderful affirmation of our attempts to make our community a better place to live and work, as well as to visit.
We were delighted even to be shortlisted amongst the top 5 finalists from around the whole country, when we went to the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2014 final. But to come away with the top spot was very special. The finalists are chosen from the Regional competition winners, and so this measures us against the very best accommodation businesses in the whole country. To win is amazing for us - and good for you too!
Wow - we were doubly honoured to receive TWO Gold Awards at the North-East Tourism Awards ceremony in Newcastle in November 2015. We won the Guest Accommodation gong, and then also went on to take top spot in the Sustainable Tourism category too. This is a great honour, and great affirmation for the work that our small team has done this year.
This means we go forward once again into the national finals, to be measured against the very best businesses from around the whole country. And it also means you can be assured that we warrant our place at the top table, and we're a safe place for your precious time away.
In 2015 VisitEngland awarded a number of 'RoSE' Awards - in 'Recognition of Service Excellence' - to their highest rated businesses, for the first time ever. We were delighted to be awarded one of them, and were invited to London to receive it. We had a grand day out, on the train!
These awards can't be applied for, or sought. They are awarded to the country's top-rated businesses following our annual assessment visit, and after taking into account all kinds of other online feedback and reviews. So it's a delight for us to receive one - and reassurance for you!
We are delighted once again to be chosen as 'Editor's Choice' in the 'Sustainable Tourism' section of the Good Hotel Guide for the 2016 printed edition.
The Good Hotel Guide is fiercely independent. A hotel cannot simply pay for an entry into the Guide - inclusion is by invitation only, and is rigorously monitored by a network of 'inspectors' who constantly report back on standards of service. To be included at all is great honour for us - but it's also a great recommendation for you - especially as the Editor considers us amongst his 'choices'!
We're pleased to be included as founder members of the Tripadvisor 'Hall of Fame' - where entry is only available to businesses which have won Tripadvisor's coveted 'Certificate of Excellence' for five consecutive years.
This is only possible because so many of our guests have written lovely things about their stay, after returning home - and we appreciate that effort and kindness very much!
Tripadvisor is a great way to remove the uncertainty (mostly!) about whether a place is regarded as a great place to stay - and we're thrilled to have been included in this new directory of the very best-rated businesses on Tripadvisor!
There can be no doubt at all that Northumberland is the best place in England to enjoy the splendour of the heavens! It's home to the largest Gold-Tier International Dark Sky Park in Europe, a designation conferred in December 2013. But almost any part of this most-sparsely populated County in England gives awesome displays of the night sky. And many places along the coast are just perfect.
And we've just been awarded the 'Dark Sky Friendly' designation by Northumberland Tourism!
Although we do have a number of street-lights here in the village and around St Cuthbert's House, so it's best to head for a really dark spot to relax and view the night sky - such as from the beach, or a quiet spot just outside the village. But it's a short journey well worth making, in order to be transported into another world...
Being 'Dark Sky Friendly' is recognition that we can lend you a pair of binoculars and a blanket or two if you like, and send you off with a hot flask! And that we don't mind what time you come home, as long as you come in quietly ;-)
We really do value our inclusion in the Good Hotel Guide, mainly because a business cannot buy a listing in this famously-independent and free-spirited Guide. You have to be nominated, and secretly assessed. All the serious papers have consistently acknowledged the GHG as the best and most reliable Guide available - because it doesn't take any ads, paid-for listings, or freebies. So this year we're especially pleased not only to be included in the Guide, but to also be chosen amongst their Editor's Choice Awards!
We're delighted to have been awarded another Tripadvisor 'Certificate of Excellence' this year. Only a few of the many thousands of properties listed on Tripadvisor worlwide ever receive the award, and we're pleased to have one for the fourth consecutive year. It's really important to us that so many guests take the trouble to post a review following their stay. So - thank you very much!
We want our business to make a positive impact on our local community, so that it becomes a better place to live and work, as well as a better place for you to visit. We pay attention to this in all sorts of ways - see our Sustainable Business pages for more details - and we're very proud that Tripadvisor has awarded us a Gold standard in their 'Green Leaders' scheme.
This year we entered into the Sustainable Tourism category at the North-East Tourism Awards, where there were some wonderful businesses who are making a positive impact on the world, and in their own communities. Many of them are at the forefront of environmental innovations, so we were absolutely delighted to come out with Silver award! See our Sustainable Business pages if you're interested to see why we're considered amongst the best in this regard.
Our Gold Award grading from the Green Tourism Business Scheme shows that we're serious about making a positive contribution to Northumberland, and about minimising the impact of our business on the environment. Theirs is a rigorous asessment process, and we're pleased to demonstrate our commitment to running our business on the principles of 'wise growth'.
One of the accolades we're particularly pleased to have, is a commendation in the Good Hotel Guide. A business cannot buy a listing in this famously-independent and free-spirited Guide. You have to be nominated, and secretly assessed.
All the serious papers have consistently acknowledged the GHG as the best and most reliable Guide available - because it doesn't take any ads, paid-for listings or freebies, and their assessments are written by 'experts' who make secret visits. This gives it an integrity many other Guides cannot claim - because they'll promote anyone who pays for a listing.
We are delighted to be included again in 2013.
We're absolutely delighted to have been awarded another Tripadvisor 'Certificate of Excellence' for 2013. Only a few of the many thousands of properties listed on Tripadvisor worlwide ever receive the award, and this is the third consecutive year we've had one - and that's thanks to those guests who have taken time and trouble to leave a review on Tripadvisor when they return home, saying how much they've enjoyed their stay here. So - thank you very much!
In 2012, the Green Tourism Business Scheme assessed the top two-percent of their Gold-Award businesses, to form a shortlist for the coveted 'Goldstar' award. To be in the running for this was amazing for us - to be counted amongst the most environmentally-aware tourism businesses in the whole of Britain, by the people who created the yardstick, was just fantastic. We didn't win, but frankly we were truly humbled at the way in which some businesses are taking seriously their responsibility to put back, rather than take away from, the environment. We have much more we could do - but we were delighted to make the (very short!) shortlist.
After winning the North-East 'Guest Accommodation of the Year' category, we went on to represent the NE Region at the National Final, and were thrilled to win the Silver Medal!
Obviously, this measures St Cuthbert's House against the very best businesses in the whole country, and we are pleased to be able to be counted up there with them.
In 2011 we won Gold at the North-East Tourism Awards (which are open to businesses from Teesside to the Scottish Border) in the Sustainable Tourism Business category. This acknowledges that we're serious about making our business work as part of the wider Northumberland economic and social landscape. We want Northumberland to be a place where people - and in particular young people, like our own young adults - can make a decent living.
