...and we love to provide the very best food here at
St Cuthbert's House.

We don't fry any of your food - not even our lovely free-range eggs - because we're passionate about what goes on your plate.

Your breakfast is prepared fresh for your arrival in the dining room, and so we invite you to choose your main course before you go to bed, and tell us what time you're aiming for. This makes for a much better breakfast than one that's been kept warm for an hour.

If you fancy treating yourself to a traditional, hearty Northumbrian Breakfast whilst you're here, you'll enjoy the highest quality ingredients, beautifully prepared and elegantly presented. And even if you're watching your waistline, you can enjoy it with a (relatively!) clear conscience, because none of it sees a frying pan.

We source award-winning sausages from our local butcher, and quality back bacon too. His meat comes from locally-reared and fully traceable stock. He firmly asserts that an animal's welfare, and the number of miles it has travelled, have a bearing on how good it tastes. And we believe him.

Our eggs come from free-ranging hens on a nearby farm, and the yolks are so bright and yellow you almost need sunglasses. We never fry them - they're much too good to do that to them - so you'll enjoy their mouth-watering splendour when lightly poached or gently scrambled.

Kippers on the rack

Also on the menu you'll find delicious kedgeree, made with oak-smoked haddock from Swallow Fish. Of course, since this smokehouse is the birthplace of the original kipper, our breakfast menu includes home-made Seahouses kipper pate too.

We can cater for special diets, so just tell us if there are things you need - or need to avoid.

Home made jams and marmalades, and honey from our own bees when they have some to spareYou can also help yourself from the buffet table too, stocked with fruit, cereals and juices.

It includes home-made jams from the monastery-kitchen of the Northumbria Community, and marmalades made by our friend Les Parsons, who's been making marmalades throughout all of his long life. Although - he has recently extended his repertoire since we asked him to provide us with a chilli marmalade!

We also began keeping our own bees during 2011 too - it's a captivating pastime - and so when they have more honey than they need, they give some to us. And you. But when they don't have any to spare, our honey comes from the local Chain Bridge honey farm which is well worth a visit.

And when our bread arrives each morning, delivered fresh from Trotter's Bakery just around the corner, it's often still warm.
