St. Cuthbert's House

northumbrian bed and breakfast

So, which is the 'best room' at St Cuthbert's House?

We are regularly asked; "which is the best room?" - but in truth there isn't a clear answer! They're all beautiful, they're all the same size (give or take a few inches), and they all have really high-quality facilities and fittings. So our most truthful answer is - it really doesn't matter!

Browse the rooms from the Rest menu above, to explore them all.

However, there are a few variables which just might lead you one way or another:

  • whether you need a Double room with 6' SuperKing-sized bed or a Twin room with 3' singles;
  • whether you prefer a bathroom with a bath and shower over, or one with a large, luxurious shower enclosure;
  • whether you need to be on the ground floor so as to avoid climbing any stairs, or to have the level-access 'wet-room' bathroom.

We promise to do our very best to accommodate your request for a particular room if you have a preference, but we can't absolutely guarantee you a specific room. We have just six rooms, and sometimes it's simply impossible to accommodate every combination of room and date requests. However, we'll always confirm it for you if you have a specific need (eg for a ground-floor room), and we'll always ensure you get the bed configuration you require!

Room Guide

So, here's a guide to our bedrooms:
On the first floor, Double-only rooms with large shower enclosure:
Aidan | Columba |

On the first floor, Double or Twin rooms with bath and shower:
Brigid | Hild |
The Aidan, Columba, Brigid and Hild rooms are accessed from a spectacular upstairs landing with the 'pulpit' viewing gallery.

On the ground floor, Double or Twin room with bath and shower:
Oswald |

On the ground floor, Double or Twin room with wet-room:
Bede |
Both the Bede and Oswald rooms have level access from the car park and throughout all communal areas of the house. Bede is particularly attractive to less mobile guests, as the bathrom is a large and comfortable ensuite 'wetroom', which does not involve climbing into a bath or shower cubicle. It's as beautiful as all of the other bathrooms.

You're also welcome to relax in the Cuthbert Room, and this is where you'll take breakfast, too. Read on for more information about the bedrooms...

Guest Comments

  • St Cuthbert's House went instantly to the top of my 'best-ever B&B's' list. I would describe it as a luxury small hotel with a family feel, but that might not fit on the signs!

Clare Balding, in her book 'Walking Home'

  • There may be other B&Bs with equally comfortable rooms, with good breakfasts, and with interesting architecture - but there are unlikely to be many other B&Bs where the personal service and attention to detail is so expertly, warmly and sincerely given.  And that is what makes the difference here; that total dedication to quality, which is really about dealing with people in the best possible way.

  • Really understates St Cuthbert's House to call it a 'B&B'.  The rooms, breakfast and overall effect knocks many a boutique hotel for six.  We will definitely be back.
    Richard & Karen, July 7 2016

  • You have restored our faith in human nature - the 'honesty bar' gets a big thumbs up... we will definitely be staying again.

  • Thinking of starting a high-quality B&B? Then come here and see how it should be done.

  • What a wonderful experience of Northumbrian hospitality.  Our first choice, when we return!
    Steve & Gill, August 8 2016

  • Your attention to the smallest detail really shows in the quality here
    Aidan & Val, July 16 2016

  • All those little extras... so much appreciated.  A wonderful haven tucked away.
    Stella & Eugene, July 21 2016

  • Superb - one of the very best we've stayed in, at home and abroad.
    Michael & Christine, Sept 9 2016

  • This was our second holiday... as perfect as the first... we've felt like we were 'coming home'.  Thank you so much, we look forward to coming back again!
    Doris & Patrick, July 12 2016

  • We just keep on coming back... Absolutely delightful, as ever, thank you both.

  • We have had the best time... Thank you for making this such a memorable holiday.
