Getting around by bus

The car isn't always King...

...although it's true that almost everyone arrives at St Cuthbert's House by car. But whether you've arrived in one or not, it's perfectly possible - and great fun! - to spend at least some of your time here at St Cuthbert's House travelling around the area by bus.  The buses running on the X18 coastal route are all brand new double-deckers, with leather seats, panoramic windows and free wifi on board! The service is pretty good, even in the off-peak periods of the year, and you'll be helping to preserve and enhance it by actually using our buses!

The bus will take you conveniently anywhere along the coast, and onward to nearby towns of Alnwick and Berwick. For a cracking day out you could take the bus to, say, Craster or Belford, and spend the day waking home - about 11 miles from either place, along some of the most spectacular coastline imaginable. And those walks could easily be shortened slightly by jumping off the bus earlier, along the way. Or perhaps walk to Bamburgh, or Low Newton, or Embleton, and enjoy a leisurely lunch with a beer or two, then take the bus home...

We have a one-page easy-to-read summary of suggested days-out by bus, which covers a host of exciting possibilities - including travelling by bus to Holy Island, where the ebb and flow of tides surely make this one of the UK's most interesting timetables! We've also included trips further afield, to Wooler and the National Park.  All things are possible, and if you're not in a hurry, you can enjoy watching the countryside glide by, from the bus.

There are 3-day and 7-day discount bus passes available, which work out much cheaper than single trips. Buses along the coast are very regular; hourly on the summer timetable and two-houry in the quieter periods. We can help you plan your journeys - we always have a supply of timetables here, so you can have your own copy for your stay, if you want it.

We're keen to do our bit to support and promote the use of our bus services, and so how about this; if you present us with tickets for three bus journeys you've made whilst staying with us, then we'll reward you with a bottle of our very good house wine. As long as you promise not to drink it on the bus...

  • We're VisitEngland's 'Best B&B in England' for 2017!

    We're VisitEngland's 'Best B&B in England' for 2017!

We were delighted to be shortlisted again, amongst the top 3 finalists from around the whole country, when we went to the VisitEngland 'Awards for Excellence 2017' ceremony at the Waldorf Hotel last week.

But then we were absolutely thrilled to be awarded the top spot - the Gold Award, making us VisitEngland's 'Best B&B in England 2017' -  as we were in 2014 too.  To win this prestigious and highly-prized accolade a second time is very special indeed.

The VisitEngland Awards for Excellence are regarded as 'the Tourism Oscars', and measure us against the very best accommodation businesses in the whole country.  To win is amazing for us - and good for you too!

As part of the proces we are 'secretly shopped' by an experienced judge and assessor, who wrote in his debrief:

"This was an extremely positive experience. Jeff and Jill are consummate hosts - my partner commented, unprompted, that “I feel as if I am visiting friends.” Service was relaxed yet attentive. Accommodation is very comfortable, and the communal areas, including honesty bar, really convivial..."

This is very affirming for us, for sure - but the real value in a comment like this is that you can be reassured, by someone who has evaluated and assessed the very best B&Bs in the whole country, that your time at SCH can provide you with everything you hope for.  And that's priceless.  Come and see...

  • Saturday May 27 - Blair Dunlop

Saturday May 27 - Blair Dunlop

What can we say about Blair...  Well, he is very much a house-favourite here, a young man whose guitar skills alone are repeatedly winning him accolades in the serious music press.  Add to that his remarkable song-writing and an endearing stage presence, and you can see why his star is seriously on the rise.  Here's his PR/bio:

Blair Dunlop, the award-winning British singer, songwriter and guitarist, has now released three albums and two EPs, and toured widely around the globe. To achieve all of this in a short 4-year career is astounding alone, but what sets Blair apart from his peers is the lyrical and musical maturity with which he writes. His third album ‘Gilded’ was released in May 2016 on his own label – Gilded Wings – and was widely acclaimed, gaining BBC Radio 2 Playlist status for the two single releases (‘The Egoist’ and ‘356’).

Prior to this Blair released his acclaimed album ‘House Of Jacks’ in mid 2014 which lived up to the promise of his 2012 debut ‘Blight and Blossom’ - the quality of which had contributed to his winning the BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award.

Clare votes us her No 1!

We've been enjoying reading Clare Balding's new book recently. She stayed with us here at St Cuthbert's House a while ago, but we were really taken aback when folks began to call to tell us that she mentions her stay at St Cuthbert's House in the book! Here's what she says, on page 201:
'St Cuthbert's House went instantly to the top of my 'best ever B&Bs' list. I would describe it as a luxury small hotel with a family feel, but that might not fit on the signs.' Aw, thanks Clare!

Want to see what's so special about Northumberland?

Some time ago, we began work with our local Tourism Association to produce a video showing some of the things which make this area so very special.  Now the video is complete, and we are deeply grateful to the remarkable young film-maker Cain Scrimgeour for working patiently with us across the seasons, to create something very, very beautiful. This is 7 minutes long, and we urge you to settle back and watch...
