How you can help

So, how then can you help...

We realise that our 'sustainable tourism' aspirations are just that - ours. But we know that many of our guests want to take care that when they come on holiday, they're doing so 'responsibly' and not damaging a fragile landscape or way of life. And as we've already said, when there is a thriving and vibrant local industry turning out great local produce, and when the local shops are busy and well-stocked, and when local artists find a ready outlet for their work - well, that makes a much better holiday destination for you, and it makes this rural economy tick over.

You won't find us standing on a soapbox shouting about this stuff whilst you're here, but we've heard many guests say how important this stuff is to them - so here are some practical ideas about how you might aspire with us. Most of them are taken from our 'Responsible Visitor Charter'. They might seem almost insignificant in isolation, but when many of us do one tiny thing, the cumulative effect can have a big impact.  So, here goes:

  • 'Take Some Home' - buy some local produce, or local beers from our bar, as a gift perhaps.
  • Visit as many of our great local attractions, shops and restaurants as you can!
  • If you have a hobby or a passion - art, photography or wildlife for example - then see how you could spend a little to support those who are engaged in that activity locally.
  • Leave your car in the car-park for a day. Take the bus, or stay local, or perhaps explore our no-car day suggestions...
  • Re-use your towels if they don't need replacing - which cuts down on electricity and water usage, and keeps a little more detergent out of the drainage system. If you leave your towels in the bath or shower tray, we'll change them - but if you leave them on the towel rail, that's your way of saying 'I'll use these again'. Obviously, re-using your towels saves us money - and we're glad to be able to give that money, and more, to our local good causes.
  • If you’re going out, then turn off all lights, and turn the thermostatic radiator valves down low.
  • If your room gets too warm, turn the thermostatic valve down, rather than opening a window.
  • Recycle! Every room has a bin, and if you leave newspapers and other recyclable materials in or near it, we'll put it in our blue bin.

We all have busy lives to lead, but we're always on the lookout for little things which can make a big difference when we apply them collectively. If you have any great ideas, or you see something we could do better, we'd love to hear about it.

    We're VisitEngland's 'Best B&B in England' for 2017!

We were delighted to be shortlisted again, amongst the top 3 finalists from around the whole country, when we went to the VisitEngland 'Awards for Excellence 2017' ceremony at the Waldorf Hotel last week.

But then we were absolutely thrilled to be awarded the top spot - the Gold Award, making us VisitEngland's 'Best B&B in England 2017' -  as we were in 2014 too.  To win this prestigious and highly-prized accolade a second time is very special indeed.

Clare votes us her No 1!

We've been enjoying reading Clare Balding's new book recently. She stayed with us here at St Cuthbert's House a while ago, but we were really taken aback when folks began to call to tell us that she mentions her stay at St Cuthbert's House in the book! Here's what she says, on page 201:
'St Cuthbert's House went instantly to the top of my 'best ever B&Bs' list. I would describe it as a luxury small hotel with a family feel, but that might not fit on the signs.' Aw, thanks Clare!

Want to see what's so special about Northumberland?

Some time ago, we began work with our local Tourism Association to produce a video showing some of the things which make this area so very special.  Now the video is complete, and we are deeply grateful to the remarkable young film-maker Cain Scrimgeour for working patiently with us across the seasons, to create something very, very beautiful. This is 7 minutes long, and we urge you to settle back and watch...
