Well, we're committed to operating St Cuthbert's House in a 'sustainable' way. This won't have much noticeable impact at all on your stay with us, but when you do stay here you become part of our attempts to make our village and our local area (and our world!) a better place to live, work and visit. And in so doing, you get the very best experience of Northumberland, because it's local, authentic and downright good for you - as well as us!
We're trying to spread the word too, and encourage other businesses to think about these issues, and give the same sorts of fantastic experiences and memories to their guests too. That way, Northumberland becomes known as the best place in the whole world to go on holiday (ok, so we're a little biaised.) So we've been instrumental in setting up NEST (Northumberland Encouraging Sustainable Tourism) with a bunch of other like-minded people, after we became inspired by the coast project and wanted to emulate what they had already achieved in Cornwall (click here to see a video.)
We're also setting up a 'Visitor Gifting' scheme, which will enable us to do more to support local causes we're passionate about.
And we've set ourselves up to be measured by the Green Tourism Business Scheme, and were pleased to be assessed at Gold Award level.
So, in short, what we're doing is Trying. We don't claim to be one of the top eco-hotels or anything like that, and we don't claim to know all the answers, and we certainly wouldn't preach or berate anyone about this stuff; but we do aim to live and work in a way which gives future generations of Sutherans a chance of having something left to enjoy. So without being fanatical, we're trying to do the sensible things which help to save the world. If we all make a small change, it amounts to a big impact. This stuff matters.
