What cookies do we drop on your computer, and what do they do?

Our cookies do not store any personally identifiable information.

We use the following cookies to track the number of visitors to our website via Google Analytics:
__utma (which contains a unique ID to record visits from the same user and expires after two years)
__utmb (to record the start of a session and expires after 30 minutes)
__utmc (a session cookie which only lasts while you view the site)
__utmz (to record where a visitor came from, and which expires after six months)

On pages which offer you video content which is stored on Youtube, the following cookies are used:
VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE (which attempts to estimate your bandwidth to show the 'correct' version of the video)
PREF (Saves your video preferences)

However, if you'd prefer to restrict, block or delete cookies from (or indeed any other website), you can use your browser settings to do this. Each browser is different, so check the 'Help' menu of your particular browser to learn how to change your cookie preferences.

What are cookies?

Also known as browser cookies or tracking cookies, cookies are tiny text files located in browser directories. They are used by web developers to help users navigate their websites efficiently and perform certain functions. Due to their core role of enhancing/enabling usability or site processes, disabling cookies may prevent users from using certain websites.

Cookies are created when a user's browser loads a particular website. The website sends information to the browser which then creates a text file. Every time the user goes back to the same website, the browser retrieves and sends this file to the website's server. As a general rule cookies are anonymous, unobtrusive and help toward a better user experience.

There are, however, more sinister uses of cookies, which have made many users wary of allowing them. One important thing to note is that a cookie is not a virus, and cannot contain a virus. They can be created to act as a form of 'spyware' as they can store information about websites that you visit. Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus products often prompt the removal of cookies as a precautionary measure. It is this precaution which has made users more wary of allowing cookies. We do not use cookies in this way.

Why are we telling you all this?

At the end of May 2012 new EU regulations came into force. These regulations stipulate that all sites that use cookies must seek explicit permission from users before setting and using cookies. That's why we showed you that popup which asked you to give your consent to receiving cookies from us.

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) announced that it would allow UK web masters to assume' implied' consent and understanding of the use of cookies, on condition that information about them is easily available - ie it should not be deeply hidden in a privacy policy page. Subsequently the ICO has decreed that cookies are considered fundamental to a site's performance and has extended the remit of 'implied consent'. The emphasis, it would seem, is on malicious and so-called ‘third party’ (often advertising) cookies. We do not use cookies in this way.

St Cuthbert's House - now in bottles...

We are very proud to have our very own 'House Beer' which has been created, brewed and bottled for us by the very lovely and passionate folks at The Durham Brewery.  It even has its own golden, shiny label too! It's a strong and sophisticated ale, which shares the standards and values of St Cuthbert's House: family-crafted; built on tradition and heritage; and high-quality. Come and pour yourself one, and savour it slowly…

    VisitEngland's 'Best B&B in England' 2017!

We were delighted to be shortlisted again, amongst the top 3 finalists from around the whole country, when we went to the VisitEngland 'Awards for Excellence 2017' ceremony at the Waldorf Hotel last week.

But then we were absolutely thrilled to be awarded the top spot - the Gold Award, making us VisitEngland's 'Best B&B in England 2017' -  as we were in 2014 too.  To win this prestigious and highly-prized accolade a second time is very special indeed.

Clare votes us her No 1!

We've been enjoying reading Clare Balding's new book recently. She stayed with us here at St Cuthbert's House a while ago, but we were really taken aback when folks began to call to tell us that she mentions her stay at St Cuthbert's House in the book! Here's what she says, on page 201:
'St Cuthbert's House went instantly to the top of my 'best ever B&Bs' list. I would describe it as a luxury small hotel with a family feel, but that might not fit on the signs.' Aw, thanks Clare!

Want to see what's so special about Northumberland?

Some time ago, we began work with our local Tourism Association to produce a video showing some of the things which make this area so very special.  Now the video is complete, and we are deeply grateful to the remarkable young film-maker Cain Scrimgeour for working patiently with us across the seasons, to create something very, very beautiful. This is 7 minutes long, and we urge you to settle back and watch...
