Columba - like Aidan - is a south-facing front room, with a beautiful original arched and frosted window, that lets the morning light pour in. The classic wall-colours, and the deep, full curtains and pelmets just burst with light and warmth.

The furniture is hand-made from solid wood, and this room has a large built-in wardrobe well-stocked with heavy wooden hangers.

The ensuite bathroom has a very large shower enclosure, and is controlled by beautiful heavy fittings, amidst a rich setting of chrome, black and deep red. You won't want to come out... However, it's worth pointing out that the entrance to this shower is via a door which is just 15" wide - so if you are very generously-proportioned then this detail can be important!

Columba has all our 'standard' bedroom facilities of course - SuperKing-size posture-sprung bed (Columba is a 'double-only' room), LCD flat-panel TV, DVD, CD/DAB radio, salon-quality hairdryer, Nespresso machine with a supply of Grand Crus coffee, kettle and well-stocked drinks tray, and beautiful crisp Egyptian Cotton sheets, deep luxurious pillows and duvets, and a supply of fluffy white towels, dressing gowns and slippers.

Columba (like all rooms) has gorgeous, heavy full-length blackout curtains and pelmet, to aid a really good night’s sleep.

There is a supply of luxurious Gilchrist & Soames' toiletries for you in your bathroom.

Free internet access, via wifi or network ports, is available throughout the house.

  • St Cuthbert's House went instantly to the top of my 'best-ever B&B's' list. I would describe it as a luxury small hotel with a family feel, but that might not fit on the signs!

Clare Balding, in her book 'Walking Home'

  • There may be other B&Bs with equally comfortable rooms, with good breakfasts, and with interesting architecture - but there are unlikely to be many other B&Bs where the personal service and attention to detail is so expertly, warmly and sincerely given.  And that is what makes the difference here; that total dedication to quality, which is really about dealing with people in the best possible way.
    Richard & Margaret June 2 2015

  • Really understates St Cuthbert's House to call it a 'B&B'.  The rooms, breakfast and overall effect knocks many a boutique hotel for six.  We will definitely be back.
    Richard & Karen, July 7 2016

  • What a gem of a place, thank you for making our stay so special. And - oh! - those mushrooms!
    Rupert & Liz, Sept 18 2017

  • Everyone says how splendid it is at St Cuthbert's House.  And do you  know - they're right.
    Stan & Pauline, Sept 18 2017

  • Thanks... for one of the world's all-time great breakfasts!

  • St Cuthbert's House and all its facilities are faultless, but you yourselves have made our visit very special - from teh lovely welcome, to all the personal touches.  We'll be back.

  • Thanks for making our holiday such a success. From Jill's gorgeous breakfasts, to Jeff's amazing knowledge of the area, and the comfort of our accessible room - the best we have stayed in anywhere in the UK - everything was just great.

    Ian & Sue, August 26 2017

  • Thank you for your warmth, hospitality and excellent advice for our activities - it has really made the difference.

    Melissa & Phil, August 19 2017

  • Thank you for making our anniversary holiday so special!  You take 'hospitality' to a whole new level.  Can't wait to return.

    Liana & Uli, August 15 2017

  • Thank you, for the welcome you gave us.  It was ...like seeing friends we didn't know we had. St Cuthbert's House, as a fabulous place to stay, is definitely at the top of our list.

"We promise to do our very best to accommodate your request for a particular room if you have a preference, but we can't absolutely guarantee you a specific room. We have just six rooms, and sometimes it's simply impossible to accommodate every combination of room and date requests. However, we'll always confirm it for you if you have a specific need (eg for a ground-floor room), and we'll always ensure you get the bed configuration you require!"
